2. What Are They

A bulldozer is an emphatic demolition and pushing machine that is often used for construction and mining projects. Dozers are primarily used for earthmoving, including digging, excavation, and leveling dirt.

Bulldozers move on heavy metal tracks, making them ideal for rough terrain but should not be used on finished concrete or asphalt. There are four types and configurations of Dozers:

1. Low Track Dozer

2. High Track Dozer
3. Wheel Dozer 4. High-Speed Dozer

3. Common Uses

  • Excavate, cut, fill, backfill, spread material.
  • Move soil, rock, other material.
  • Perform rough and finish grading.
  • Maintain haul roads and temporary roads through rocky or rough terrain.
  • Clear construction sites of debris, clear land, pull out stumps, and other buried items.
  • Tow accessory equipment.
  • Push other heavy equipment.

4. Different Attachments and their Applications

  • The blade is the primary attachment on the front end of a dozer used for moving material. There exist three categories of blades 1) general-purpose blades (such as power angle and tilt blade, straight blade, variable radius blade), 2) production blades (a semi-universal blade, heavy-duty universal blade), and 3) special application blades (push plates, landfill blade, rake blade, KG blade, V-tree cutter blade, coal blade)
  • The winch is an attachment commonly mounted on the rear of a dozer that uses an electric motor and wire rope to pull equipment, trees, and other objects.
  • Rippers are used for ripping up hard soil, pavement, rocks, and roots. They are typically mounted on the back of a dozer and have one or more points.
  • A disc is a towed attachment that is used for loosening soil.
  • Side booms are special attachments that are used in pipe or cable laying jobs. A side boom is mounted on one side of the dozer, and counterweights are mounted on the other side.

6. Safety

Safety of the operator:

  • Maintaining control at all times.
  • Avoiding obstacles.
  • Avoiding conditions that might cause the dozer to tip over.
  • Working up or down hills versus along the slope.
  • A daily or walk-around inspection should be done before starting the dozer to begin work.
  • Check for worn, broken, damaged, and missing components.
  • Check all fluid levels and top off any low fluids.
  • Always set the parking brake when leaving a bulldozer unattended.
  • Operate a bulldozer with caution when on uneven terrain.
  • Always check the blind spots of a bulldozer.
  • Always wear proper PPE while operating a dozer.
  • Keep up with preventative maintenance and upkeep of a dozer.
