2. What Are They

A flatbed truck is a type of truck that can be either articulated or rigid. As the name suggests, its bodywork is an entirely flat, level ‘bed’ with no sides or roof. This heavy equipment is most practical because the heavy materials can be loaded and unloaded by hand or by crane from any direction. They are of different capacity loads, and they can be equipped with a crane to facilitate material lifting.

3. Common Uses

  • Flatbed trucks are often used for carrying oversized loads or products with unusual shapes.
  • They are used for carrying construction materials such as concrete, brick, steel beam and rods, and pre-fabricated materials.
  • They are also used to transport other equipment.

4. Types of Jobs

  • All construction and maintenance sites
    • Excavation
    • Trenching
    • Bridge
    • Road

5. Safety

  • Maintaining control at all times
  • Avoiding obstacles
  • Avoiding conditions that might cause the equipment to tip over
  • Working up or down hills versus along the slope
  • A daily or walk-around inspection should be done before starting the equipment to begin work.
  • Check for worn, broken, damaged, and missing components.
  • Check all fluid levels and top off any low fluids.
  • Always set the parking brake when leaving the equipment unattended.
  • Operate the equipment with caution when on uneven terrain.
  • Always check the blind spots of the equipment.
  • Always wear proper PPE while operating the equipment.
  • Keep up with the preventative maintenance and upkeep of a truck.
