An aerial boom is a vehicle-mounted work platform usually mounted on a truck that can move vertically and/or horizontally. Some aerial lifts can even rotate around a vertical axis. Aerial lifts are used to lift workers to difficult work positions. It is featured with fast speed, high mobility, and it can reach where there is a need for aerial work within a short time. With the support of the cargo body and the hydraulic outriggers, it is much more stable, and it is not confined to the work on even ground. Aerial booms typically have two sets of controls – the upper set, installed in the work platform or bucket, and a lower set installed at the base of the machine.

• Transport of lifting workers to difficult work positions.
• It can also be used as a crane to lift equipment to job sites. 

• Bridge construction and maintenance.
• Utility installation, relocation, and maintenance.

Safety of the operator:

• Only operate with at least two people present – one of whom must remain on the ground.
• Ground personnel should be trained to operate lower controls in case of emergency.
• Personnel in the bucket should be harnessed to prevent falls.
• Operators should wear appropriate clothing and follow the necessary safety procedures that apply to all occasions.
• The operator’s PPE should include standard eye protection, work gloves, proper footwear, hearing protection, and hard hats.
• Equipment should be mounted carefully, keeping three points of contact at all times, and the steps and cab interior should be kept clean.
• Extreme caution should be applied around overhead power lines and underground utilities.

Safety of the others:

• Always keep others in sight and away from the equipment.
• Establish a safe work zone.
• Never allow riders on the equipment

Equipment Safety:

• Perform prestart inspection and lubrication daily.
• Make sure equipment is performing correctly.
• Check for obstacles and hazards in the area.
• Obey rules about parking and operating on inclines.
• Know the equipment and its limitations.
